The Instrumental Quintet of London takes its name from the Quintette Instrumental de Paris, formed by the famous French flautist
René Le Roy at the beginning of the 20th century. Le Roy commissioned many works for this unusual combination, mainly from French composers such as Pierne, Roussel, Ropartz, Jolivet, Malipiero, and Florent Schmidt. The Belgian composer, Joseph Jongen, also from this period, has written perhaps the most virtuoso work for the quintet, which will be the finale of this concert. Susan Milan has commissioned quintets from the Czech composer Jindrich Feld and the British composer Robert Walker. The quintet lends itself admirably to the Impressionist genre, with its rich and colorful combination of instrumental tones.
